Shona, A Bantu Language

Shona (chiShona) is a Bantu language of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. It is one of the most widely spoken Bantu languages. During the 11th century, the Shona, also known as the Karanga people formed kingdoms on the Zimbabwe plateau.

Zimbabwe, Art & Culture

The name “Zimbabwe” stems from a Shona term for Great Zimbabwe, an ancient city in the country’s south-east whose remains are now a protected site.  The Country was formerly known as Southern Rhodesia in 1898.

The Shona built great stone cities in southern Africa over a thousand years ago. The Shona work in a variety of occupations, and their artists are well known for their finely carved wooden headrests and stone sculptures.

The Ndebele are well known for their outstanding craftsmanship, their decorative homes, and their distinctive and highly colourful mode of dress and ornamentation.

Zimbabwe, a land rich in heritage and filled with natural beauty, including a bona fide natural wonder in the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls. A trip to Zimbabwe has a lot more to offer than just its most famous attraction.
